The best shunt is no shunt
Ch. Saint-Rose
SHUNTING OPERATIONS
For quite a long time choice for hydrocephalus treatment of many doctors was implanting a shunt. Shunt treatment
is a rather effective, although according to some data complications after this kind of operations apper in 40 to
60 % of cases.
Depending on a reason that caused a disfunction, the entire shunt or its components must be replaced.
The most common cases are complications needing shunt revisions in the period from 6 months to 1 year after the operation.
The majority of patients who had shunt operation had to have quite a few surgeries during their lifetime.
Which makes clear the fact that after shunting operation a petient becomes SHUNT-DEPENDENT, his entire life will depend on the shunt functioning.
ENDOSCOPIC TREATMENT OF HYDROCEPHALUS
Endoscopic third ventriculostomy
 |
It is a modern neurosurgical method of obstructive hydrocephalus treatment which is based on regeneration of natural ways of liquor outflow through the third ventricle into basal cisterns of the brain.
|
Operation indications:
- primary operation on obstructive hydrocephalus;
- alternative operation if there are some shunt system complications that cause removal of the earlier installed system (instead of "shunt revision");
- posttraumatic and other types of hydrocephalus.

Advantages of endoscopic operations:
- operation restores physiological CSFG circulation from brain ventricles into basal cisterns;
- absence of alien body implantation (shunting system)in organizm;
- risk of hyperdrainage is much lower;
- lower traumatism of operations;
- operation is more effective economically;
- life quality is much higher.
The same endoscopic method can be used in brain cyst and other central nervous system anomalies treatment.
